OPERA IX

The ultimate in Black Metal, forget all your Emperor, Cradle of Filth and Dark Funeral, this Italian fivesome beats them all. Currently consisting of Cadaveria on Vocals, Ossian on Guitars, Vlad on Bass, Flegias on Drums and Lunaris on Keyboards their new album `The Black Opera' is the most intense example of BM I can give. A deep fantasy delve into the secrets of the Occult, the album has more to offer then just heavy metal music. Cadaveria is at her most insane vocally and the Guitars have moved on a lot since their previous album `Sacro Culto' brought more to the foreground giving the most incredible atmospherics ever heard. Devastating riffs and pounding drums mixed with the awesome femme vocals make this album for me the best BM written to date. The content is extraordinary, split into 6 acts the album dives into the Occult, moving away from the standard verse, chorus, verse structure and creating a new style that is inevitably going to the style of the future. The first track, `The First Seal' sets the scene and the tone of the music to come, heavy to the extreme yet soft and melodic in sections. Yet tracks like Tempio Magico are totally different yet blend in perfectly starting off slow and throbbing with Latin Lyrics, then all of a sudden `E ora Giura' and then the most devastating Guitar riffs on the album leading beautifully into `The Sixth Seal' the end of the beginning.  The album grows on you the more times you listen to it and I challenge any BM lover to hate it, or even not like it a tincy bit. It has everything you want and more the only problem with it being the length, its 44 mins long when in reality it needs to be five and a half years long.
